Bats Go Cold As Vikings Fall To Corn Dogs

By: Brandon Januska

Crown Point, Ind. – July 29, 2023 – The Southland Vikings travelled to Crown Point on Saturday to take on the league leading Lake County Corn Dogs for the final time this regular season but could not overcome a rough first inning as they fell 6-2.

A shaky first inning from Will Moell saw five runs come across for the Corn Dogs on three hits, three walks and a hit batter. Moell exited the game after the first inning due to shoulder pain.

That moved Ty Chaney Jr. to the mound after starting the game at third base and he picked up the load for the Vikings, tossing six innings of one run ball on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Vikings could not get the bats going, despite seeing the leadoff man reach base in five different innings. Five Corn Dogs pitchers scattered just three Viking hits.

Southland finally got on the board in the eighth inning when Angelo Luna came through with a two out single to drive in George Leouses and Jack Fitzharris, who had each reached base on walks to make the score 6-2.

The Vikings (25-21) sit one game behind the second place Northwest Indiana Oilmen and three games ahead of the fourth place Indiana Panthers with just four games remaining.

Up next for the Vikings is a trip to Griffith to take on the Generals. First pitch is at 4:10pm with Nolan Vlcek expected to start for the Vikings.
