Vikings crushed by Oilmen

By:
Errors and walks kill the Vikings as they fall to the Norwest Indiana Oilmen 14-3.

While the Southland Vikings were only outhit by one, six errors along with 10 walks allowed the Oilmen to dominate their home opener. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the 2nd inning, the Vikings tied the game at 1 when Vince Parisi’s single scored Dan Eliopulos. But in the bottom half of the inning, the Oilmen scored two more runs mainly due to four walks by Vikings’ starting pitcher Evan Nietfeldt. In fact, he did not give up a hit until the third inning.

In the top half of the 3rd, the Vikings once again tied the game as Jason Ziegler led off with a single and then a hit by Jesse Wiggins led to an error by Oilmen pitcher Ryan Wilkinson that scored Wiggins. Elliott Armstrong would then knock in Ziegler to tie the game at 3.

But that would be it for the Vikings’ offense as the Oilmen scored 11 runs over the last seven innings with the 7th inning being the only one they did not score in. The Vikings finished with six hits as Armstrong went 2-4 with an RBI. They will get their chance for revenge on Tuesday when they head back to Whiting, Indiana for a rematch against the Oilmen. First pitch will be at 7:10.
