Zephyrs outlast Vikings thanks to wild pitch

By:

It took 11 innings, but the Chicago Zephyrs (6-16) managed to put away the Southland Vikings (9-12) 6-5 on Saturday at Waubonsee Community College.

The Vikings found themselves down 3-0 after two innings but in the top of the fourth, the Vikings were able to tie the game thanks to a 2-run triple by Chris Stevens who then scored during a Zephyr error on the next play.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Zephyrs took a 5-3 lead, which ended Tony Balcazar's day on the mound. He allowed eight hits and four earned runs along with one strikeout.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Vikings cut the deficit to one due to an RBI single by Vince Parisi. In the top of the ninth, Elliott Armstrong led off with a triple and Shane Brown knocked him in to tie the game at 5.

After a couple chances by the Zephyrs to win the game, they finally pulled through in the 11th inning when a wild pitch by Jonathon Rosario just squirted away from catcher Alec Ornelas and Ryan Adams scored from third.

While each team had 10 hits, they also had three errors apiece. The Vikings will look to get back on track on Sunday when they talk on the Illinois Lincolns.
